The winners of the Méliès d’or 2019

Sitges presented the Méliès d’Or Awards with newly elected award winner ‘In Fabric’ by Peter Strickland, ‘Wild’ by Jan Verdijk, and director and actress Asia Argento for the Career Méliès.

Once again, the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia welcomes the Méliès d’or awards ceremony, presented by the Méliès International Festivals Federation network and which, every year, reward the best feature and short films in Europe.

For the second year in a row, the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia has been chosen to celebrate the 2019 Méliès d’or Ceremony at its headquarters, in the Meliá Sitges Auditori. In Fabric, the film directed by British filmmaker Peter Strickland, and which already received the Méliès d’Argent at the Festival Européen du Film Fantastique in Strasbourg, was the winner in the feature film category. The short film Wild, directed by Jan Verdijk, winner of the Méliès d’Argent at the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam, picked up the award in the best short film category. The awards ceremony was completed with the Méliès Career Award for the Italian director and actress, Asia Argento, for her contribution to the fantastic genre.

The Méliès d’or and Méliès d’argent awards are presented every year to the best European fantastic feature and short films. The awards acknowledge both quality and creativity, and generate a unique visibility for films and their directors. 

The awards are presented by the Méliès International Festivals Federation. a network of 26 film festivals in 19 different countries, with a global attendance of more than 800,000 visitors, making it a vital economic and cultural force in the fantastic film scene.

The Méliès International Festivals Federation mission is to promote European fantastic genre film productions around Europe and the world, improving their visibility and their positioning among audiences and within the industry, and encouraging their circulation. The Federation works to fulfil this mission through its network of festivals in Europe, its support members in Asia, North America and South America, as well as the Méliès awards to the excellence of European genre films.

The Méliès d’or awards ceremony was held this Sunday, October 6th, at 10:45 p.m. at the Melià Sitges Auditori, before the screening of Lux Aeterna, directed by Gaspar Noé, who received the Méliès d’Or for Climax in 2018.
