The winners of the Méliès d’or 2020

The winners of the Méliès d’or 2020 are the feature film Pelican Blood by Katrin Gebbe and the short film Best Friend by David Feliu, Juliana de Lucca, Nicholas Olivieri, Varun Nair and Yi Shen. The Career Méliès of this years goes to Spanish director Paco Plaza. The awards are presented by the Méliès International Festivals Federation network, to the best European fantastic feature and short films.

For the third consecutive year, the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia in Sitges hosted the Méliès d’or award ceremony. 
Pelican Blood by German filmmaker Katrin Gebbe was the winner in the feature film category. It previously won the Méliès d’argent at the Motel X Lisbon International Horror Film Festival.

In the short film category, the award went to Best Friend, directed by David Feliu, Juliana de Lucca, Nicholas Olivieri, Varun Nair and Yi Shen. It was the winner of the Méliès d’argent at Fancine in Malaga. The annual Career Méliès was presented to Spanish director Paco Plaza, for his outstanding contribution to the fantastic genre.

The Méliès d’or and Méliès d’argent awards are presented every year to the best European fantastic feature and short films. The awards acknowledge both quality and creativity, and generate a unique visibility for films and their directors. 

The awards are presented by the Méliès International Festivals Federation. a network of 26 film festivals in 19 different countries, with a global attendance of more than 800,000 visitors, making it a vital economic and cultural force in the fantastic film scene.

Its mission is to promote European fantastic genre film productions around Europe and the world, improving their visibility and their positioning among audiences and within the industry, and encouraging their circulation. The Federation works to fulfil this mission through its network of festivals in Europe, its support members in Asia, North America and South America, as well as the Méliès awards to the excellence of European genre films.

The Méliès d’or awards ceremony was held Saturday, October 17th, at 20:00 p.m. at the Meliã Sitges Auditori, before the screening of Kandisha, directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo.
