The winner of the Méliès d’Argent Award for Best European Fantastic Genre Short Film at HÕFF Film Festival, is “Atom & Void” directed by Gonçalo Almeida.

A science fiction film starring a real spider. In the depths of Valya´s burrow, a persistent rumble disrupts her life, thrusting her into uncharted territory.

“For a piece of work which sees our protagonist attempt to escape a seemingly impossible situation. As they crawl towards the light, the true nature of their predicament – as well as ours – is soon revealed. Not only is the film a remarkable technical achievement, but like all great sci-fi, it soon reveals itself to be a thoughtful treatise on human nature (even in the absence of said humans) and an uncomfortable meditation on where we are going and the ultimate control we have on the universe around us.”

HÕFF Film Festival is part of the Méliès International Festivals Federation, an association currently consisting of 33 film festivals, whose mission it is to promote European fantastic cinema around the globe. The Méliès d’argent is awarded to short films for cinematic quality and creativity. The winning short film at HÕFF qualifies for the competition for the Méliès d’or.
